“Teamwork” is the 4th and most written about of the Top 5 Corporate Values. It has earned its place because it’s a driver of success and also a feel good topic.
Teamwork can, however, be misunderstood to be just a soft issue..
The one thing I know about sporting success and it’s that it never comes by accident. It never comes by constantly changing players or strategy. It also doesn’t come from being nice.
It always comes from hard work and perseverance. And routines.
10,000 hours is a real thing in most endeavors. Constant change can only be built on constant practice and discipline that puts basic skills into unconscious competence.
The glorified parts of teamwork – inspiration, motivation, determination, collaboration – are all real and necessary.
The inglorious parts – discipline, repetitive practice, pain & even boredom are all necessary too.
Champions know this.
As a Leader, your responsibility is to ensure that your team works together to achieve outcomes. Teamwork is your job.
A single player needs to practice and focus to be good. A Team needs more structure and more practice and more attention to learn how to be good.
“success… never comes by accident…”
The Balance you set between motivation and discipline will determine outcomes.
Are you a motivator, or an organizer? Or do you balance both?
If Teamwork is one of your “Values” – do you focus as much on “work” as you do on “Team”?
