There’s a lot of pushing and pulling on sailing ships.
Sailing ships combine simple things to achieve marvelous and complex outcomes.
Wind pushes on canvas. Canvas pulls on rope and metal and wood, which then pushes on water, which pushes back on the keel. And so the ship moves forward.
That’s it.
The marvelous and complex bit is that the ship doesn’t just go where the wind pushes. It’s keel is designed so the water pushes back and the ship goes forward not sideways.
That’s how cargo was once moved around the world. Tack by tack.
To sail a ship you need to understand wind, sails, rope, metal, wood and water..
and how to combine and balance them…over and over every day in all weathers. Tack by tack.
At BalancedKaizen we have broken down how leadership works.
There’s a lot of pushing and pulling in well led teams. They combine simple things to achieve marvelous and complex outcomes.
What we Think about pushes what we Do. What we do pulls on where we Aim and what we See which combine over Time to create new thoughts, that in turn drive our next actions.
Just 5 parts in a continuous cycle.🌸
Think, Do, Aim, See & Time.
The marvelous and complex bit is that teams don’t just go where their own thinking pushes them. Effective leaders use where they aim, what they see and how they use time to push back, so the team goes forward not sideways.
That’s how effective teams of sailors sailed the ships that moved cargo around the world. Tack by tack.
And how your team does what it does today.
To lead an effective team you need to understand what you think, what you do, where you aim, what you see and how you use time.
and how to combine and balance them…over and over every day in all weathers. Tack by tack.
If you follow BalancedKaizen you will learn about simple things that combine to make complex outcomes.
You’ll learn how leadership works.
More to come…

I am learning every week from your tips!
Hi Bruce
I have inspired with what you have been sharing on teams and leadership. I worked as part of the Supply Chain Commercial Team when you were in CCA.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience.
Regards
Joy
Oh thank you Joy. I remember those years and our whole team with great affection. My aim is just to help people think about leadership because leadership makes such a difference to people’s lives. Best wishes.
